Finally...The world of Breakfast cereal has been restored.

I have been meaning to write this blog for awhile now. And since Lisa is still out with the girls for mutual, I decided now would be a good time.

When I was a kid, we were only treated to sugared cereal every so often. I am fairly certain one of the reasons why is because as soon as we would see a box of the sugary goodness come out of the Waremart bag, we were instantly into it. A box of sugar cereal would not last more than 2 days in the Sorenson household. Actually, that is the only reason why. We would eat it so fast, that my mom would go back to buying Rice Chex instead.

One of my favorite sugar cereals was Alphabits. Sure there were other sugar cereals that had more sugar in them, but only Alphabits came in the shapes of different letters! I enjoyed Alphabits all growing up.

But then something happened. One day many years ago when I had to start buying my own cereal, I decided I was going to take myself back to the glory days of living in Parker Brothers Valley (Yes, my childhood neighborhood growing up was named after the game makers. We even had Monopoly Park across the street!) and buy all the boxes of cereal that I would crave, but only get every blue moon. In my cart I had some Cap'n Crunch, a box of Cookie Crisp, (A cereal that my Mom drew the line at. No nutritional value whatsoever in that stuff...it is what makes it taste sooo good!) some Trix, and some Golden Grahams. All I needed was a box of Alphabits to round it out. But they were nowhere to be found!!! I tried every grocery store in the Tri-City area but to no avail. It was then that I had to face the cold hard truth...Alphabits no longer existed in the cereal universe.

For several years after the Alphabits extinction (As it came to be known.) I would look up and down the cereal aisle in vain trying to find the blue box with the boy and girl happily sharing a bowl of Alphabits goodness on it. After finally coming to grips with Post Cereal ripping out my heart by way of discontinuing Alphabits, I could walk down the cereal isle and not feel betrayed by their heartless gesture.

And then it happened! Last year I was at Walmart with the girls buying groceries. We were heading down the cereal isle, and just when we were about through it something caught my eye. Could it really be??? YES!!!! YES IT WAS!!!! WOOOHOOO!!!! ALPHABITS WERE BACK!!!

I felt like Sir Mix-a-Lot when he found out buttermilk biscuits were free today. Like when Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. (Which I believe happened 19 years ago today.) After many years of want, I was finally able to have again.

I bought only one box that day, and I pretty much ate the whole box myself. Since that day I have bought a box every time we go back to grocery shop. My girls like it too. I just hope that unlike their old man, they don't have to have it taken away from them.

Yes, the world of breakfast cereal is back where it should be.

And in remembrance of Tyson getting knocked out for the first time in his career, here is a clip of the 10th round when he went down.

Oh yes, and I can't forget those Buttermilk Biscuits!

That is way funny! My only problem with cereal from my childhood is that I can remember exactly what I think it tasted like, and it's good, in my head. And then I have the real thing and either realize that my tastebud memories were off, or I just don't like cereal anymore.
Cap'n Crunch is the one that I have the strongest memories of, I even love the smell, but what's up with the film it leaves on the roof of your mouth?!
And why does my husband love the uh, the reese's cereal(?), the one that looks like round, nasty colored brown balls of cereal poop? The look of it alone grosses me out!

I am a big cereal lover!! It was almost difficult for me to finish reading this post because it made me want to run out and get some sugary goodness for myself. To restore my health I have been on a strict diet to cleanse my body and I have been without sugar for over 2 weeks! Two FRIGGIN' WEEKS!!! Oh my goodness!! Pass me that cereal!!

:o)

I LOVED Alpha-Bits growing up too! Hopefully I can find them around here.

I laugh on the mornings that Riley asks for the "good" cereal and she means Life cereal! We are cruel and have yet to introduce any true sugar cereals to them yet... I'm sure the day is coming soon!

This post was a blast from the past - I haven't thought about Alphabits for decades! I'm going to keep an eye out for it at the store - thanks for the heads up! :)

Don't you love how the box says 'new' like it never existed before ?

And just so you know, when Lorelai and I were playing dog and owner today, it was Alphabits that filled her 'dogbowl'!

I had a nearly identical reaction, only my cereal of love was Quisp. A few years ago while walking through the grocery store with Cindy, I saw a whole endcap display of Quisp, and to my surprise the box Still has the classic retro look! I bought a box every time we were there, until it disappeared again.

You can get it online, but I have a real hard time paying shipping for cereal...

My older brother loved Quisp cereal and my mom would only buy it for him occasionally. I found it on-line and every year send him a few boxes for his birthday. Obviously, we are not the only ones who like it based on the above comment.

Golden Grahams were only in our house maybe once a year. They were my favorite!
I had Wheaties every morning. I put so much sugar on them it would have been the equivalent of 6 bowls of Cookie Crisp.
When Jeff and I were first married, we went crazy with the sugar cereal. He had a very similar up-bringing.

I also felt that way when I found Jello Puddin Pops, but alas they have changed the formula. They taste like a fudgesickle.

I've actually found Alphabits a few times at Winco over the years. But it hasn't been carried consistently for years. And I agree with Lisa, I hate how they try to make it sound like a new thing. All that aside, I'v been tempted, very tempted, to buy a box of it. I just can't bring myself to pay practically 4 dollars for less than 12 lousy ounces of cereal.
And Alphabits used to be one of the cheaper ones.

i love "new" on the box... (well, i guess the box is "new" and certainly hope the cereal inside is;) i miss all the cereal commercials, too:( i still remember most of their jingles, which katherine finds quite annoying, ha!!!

You know, I was thinking the same thing a few months ago. I still have not seen them at Walmart, but now that I know they are there, the search is on! Keep up the good investigative journalism Donaldo!

I am SO going to put Alpha Bits on my shopping list. I've never had it but Hunter LOVES alphabet soup and wants to eat cereal for every meal, so I figure I can't lose. Thanks!

Why do I have a feeling that your next post will be a trip down memory lane {judging by all the photo's stacked on the scanner}

Oh how I am laughing. We used that cereal to torture each other. Love them too. Glad that they have returned all fresh and new like.
